Are you looking for a 3D model for your latest project? Or are you a designer who wants to sell their models? CGTrader is a perfect place for you. It’s a 3D model marketplace for computer graphics, virtual/augmented reality and gaming, backed by a strong professional designer community.
Marius Kalytis and Dalia Lasaite are behind this Vilnius-based startup. CGTrader was founded in 2011 by Marius Kalytis, a 3D designer. Dalia Lasaite, a serial entrepreneur, joined the company as a co-founder in 2013.
The company was founded by Marius Kalytis, a 3D designer. While working in computer graphics industry himself, Marius saw a lack of reliable and easy-to-use platforms to access 3D models in the market. In addition, at the time there was no place for freelance designers to sell their models at fair terms. Since its founding year CGTrader focused on building a strong 3D designers community step by step introducing community features like blog, galleries, forum, custom job market, and most recently – tutorial section, with an easy-to-use uploader. The direct communication between 3D designers and buyers is enabled on the platform.
CGTrader received enabled investments in developing the platform. In 2013 the first funding round amounting to 185,000 EUR was attracted from Practica Capital, a seed and venture fund based in Vilnius, Lithuania. In 2014, the company raised more funding from Intel Capital and Practica Capital. The company has reached 50k users in 2014 and a milestone of 500k users and 500k models on the platform in May 2016, which currently makes CGTrader the largest 3D model marketplace.
It’s pretty easy to use. As a buyer, you can choose what sort of 3D model you need. You can choose between VR/AR Ready Low-poly 3D Models, professional 3D models and 3D printing models. You can browse the categories to find exactly what you need. If there’s nothing for you available? No problem. You can also post a 3D job offer and hire someone to create your perfect model.
The platform is, however, equally attractive from the designer’s end. Besides building up a portfolio and getting some money off your projects, you can also participate in challenges and win prizes. If you feel there’s something you can do better, you can get constructive criticism of your work or check out tutorials.
And, let’s face it. CGTrader is definitely designer-friendly as it offers very high royalty rate (up to 80%) to 3D designers. And a lot of people see the attraction. Currently, the platform has over 600,000 users and more than 520,000 3D models uploaded.
