BIO

Dr. hab. Michał Lubina, an assistant professor at the Institute of Near and Far East UJ. He specializes in social sciences, particularly in political science. His research focuses on contemporary Burma (Myanmar) and Russian-Chinese relations.

He holds a master’s degree in Russian Studies (2008) and Far Eastern Studies (2012); he also studied abroad in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Minsk as part of exchange programs and was a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Beijing (2009/2010). He obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science in 2014 and habilitation in 2020.

Since 2011, he has been associated with the Institute of Near and Far East UJ (previously with the Institute of Russia and Eastern Europe UJ). In 2016, he became the first director of the Sejong Institute UJ. In 2018, he was a visiting professor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

He is the author of eight books: pioneering works on Burma in Poland (including the first history of this country and the only biography of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi), the first monograph in Poland on contemporary Russian-Chinese relations (“The Bear in the Shadow of the Dragon”), as well as three monographs in English, including “A Political Biography of Aung San Suu Kyi” (Routledge: New York-Abington 2020) and “Russia and China: A Political Marriage of Convenience” (Budrich: Oppladen-Berlin-Toronto 2017).
