BIO

Slawomir Witold Nitras – Polish political scientist and politician, member of the Sejm of the fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth and tenth terms, deputy to the European Parliament of the seventh term, in 2014-2015 chief advisor to Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz.

In 1998 he graduated in political science from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Szczecin. From 1997 to 1998 he worked as an assistant at the US Institute of Political Science and Philosophy. From 1998 to 1999 he was director of the office of the Koszalin Governor. From 1999 to 2002, he sat on the board of directors of the Koszalin Mineral Raw Materials Mine “Kruszywa Koszalin” S.A. The next three years he was involved in running a private business.

In 2001, he joined the Civic Platform – between 2006 and 2010, he sat on the party’s national board and was its vice-chairman in the West Pomeranian region, in addition, from December 2003 to October 2013, he chaired the PO in Szczecin.

In the parliamentary elections of 2005 and 2007, he won a parliamentary seat in the Szczecin district for the Sejm of the fifth and sixth terms as a PO candidate. In 2007 he received 65,993 votes (the best individual result in the district). During both terms, he was a member of the State Treasury Committee, and in the VI term he also worked in the Economy Committee and the “Friendly State” Extraordinary Committee.

In the 2009 elections to the European Parliament, he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in the Gorzow district from the first place on the list, receiving 107,413 votes.

In the 2015 parliamentary elections, he won a mandate as an MP of the eighth term, receiving 20,930 votes. He became chairman of the Delegation of the Sejm and Senate of Poland to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. In the eighth-term Sejm, he became a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and also worked in the Maritime Affairs and Inland Navigation Committee. In March 2018, he was announced as the joint candidate of Civic Platform and Nowoczesna for the office of Mayor of Szczecin in the 2018 local elections.

In the 2019 parliamentary elections, he ran for the Sejm on behalf of the Civic Coalition. He won a seat as an MP for the ninth term, receiving 78,513 votes, which was the best individual result in the district.

Prior to the 2023 parliamentary elections, he was the coordinator of the Citizens’ Election Control campaign, in which more than 60,000 people signed up. In the same election, he was re-elected as an MP, winning 90,720 votes. In the Tenth Sejm, he sat on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
