BIO

Joanna Tyrowicz is a professor of economic sciences (as of 2019). She has been affiliated with the University of Warsaw since the beginning of her career, receiving her habilitation in 2013 and her doctorate from the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw in 2006. In addition to her alma mater in 2002, she also completed her studies in 2004 at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. For many years she was involved in the work of NGOs and humanitarian organizations in Poland and abroad.

From 2007 to 2017 she worked at the Economic Institute of the National Bank of Poland, analyzing the labor market and the situation of households. She is a recipient of the award of the Minister of Science and Higher Education (twice) and other awards for research achievements. Since 2017, she has worked on a permanent basis with the IZA in Bonn. She has also worked with the World Bank and the European Commission. A former Fulbright Scholar (at Columbia University) and Mellon Fellow (at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies), she has also been a visiting fellow at the IAAEU in Trier and at the University of Regensburg. At the time of her appointment to the Monetary Policy Council, her publications had accumulated more than 1,400 citations (according to Google Scholar). She is an editor for the journals PLoS One and Small Business Economics.

Her research concerns the labor market with a particular focus on structural changes in the economy, including demographics and sectors: from quantitative simulation models, applied empirical research to experimental methods. Her initial interest focused on the phenomenon of unemployment. Her habilitation book “Hysteresis of Unemployment in Poland” won the Prof. Edward Lipinski prize for the best book of the year, awarded by the Polish Economic Society. Over time, this research program expanded to include issues related to sectoral and occupational mobility and inequality. She has also devoted much of her research attention to the corporate sector, including privatization and the transmission mechanisms of sectoral and global shocks to corporate behavior.

September 7, 2022. The Senate of the Republic of Poland appointed Joanna Tyrowicz as a member of the Monetary Policy Council.
