BIO

Turkish journalist and writer. She was born in Izmir, lived in Istanbul, and currently resides in Zagreb. She graduated from the Faculty of Law at Ankara University. While still a student, she was a correspondent for the left-wing Cumhuriyet newspaper. She then worked for CNN Turk in Venezuela and Argentina. Between 2000 and 2009, she worked for Milliyet magazine, and then for Habertürk until 2012. She was dismissed from both editorial offices after writing articles critical of the government, especially those related to the massacre in Roboski in the province of Uludere in December 2011. After her dismissal, she went on a trip around the Middle East.

Her columns have also been published in magazines such as The New York Times, Der Spiegel, and The Guardian. In 2018, during the 6th edition of the Europe with a View to the Future forum organized by the European Solidarity Center in Gdańsk, Ece Temelkuran won the New Europe Ambassador award for the best book on European topics published in 2017 for her book Turkey: Madness and Melancholy.
