GZM METROPOLIS

GZM Metropolis – on the road to modern mobility

GZM Metropolis is Poland’s first metropolis.  41 cities and municipalities, ca. 2.3 mln residents, ca. 240 thous. companies and institutions, which generate ca. 8% of our country’s GDP. GZM Metropolis is a platform for broad cooperation, especially in matters related to integrated transportation. GZM Metropolis basis its approach on e-mobility as well as other modern and innovative solutions designed to improve quality of life among  residents thorough environmentally-friendly activities that improve air quality.

In an era rapid economic change, increasing expectations of residents regarding quality of life as well as increase environmental awareness – modern, state-of-the-art mobility seems to be a necessity. GZM Metropolis has a chance to be a pioneer in this field, leading the way in Poland as well as a significant portion of Europe.

It’s speeding up: the Metropolitan
Train System in GZM.

GZM is working on developing a Metropolitan Train System – designed to be the backbone of the metropolitan area’s public transport system. It’s concept has already been fully created and feasibility studies are currently being worked on. Metropolis GZM is looking to rebuild the importantanance of railway transportation in its region. Developing an efficiently functioning Metropolitan Train System requires significant financial investments and cooperation between several partners. But the Metropolis is already actively supporting railway travel. Passengers have access to universe tickets – which can be used to travel aboard trains of “Kolej Śląska”, buses, trams and trolleys. Metropolis GZM will also provide 26 mln PLN in funding to Dąbrowa Górnicza which is to be used for the development of railway travel infrastructure – this having a large Impact on agglomerative traffic and the future of the Metropolitan Train System.

It’s here that the biggest rental of electric bikes in Europe is being developed.

GZM Metropolis is promoting a change in mobility habits and wants to present the bicycle as an “equal” mode of transportation vs. the bus or car. That’s why, in 2021, it plans to launch the largest electric-bike rental in Europe. With 10 thousands units at the disposal of potential users. Till the time that it is officially opened GZM Metropolis has integrated all of the bike rentals that exist within its borders and in all its cities. So – if you decide to rent a bike in one city, you can easily return it in another. Over a period of four months, nearly 27 thousand riders took advantage of this option.

Drones providing services to residents of the GZM Metropolis.
That’s how the future of our region can look.

GZM Metropolis has the ambitious goal of becoming Poland’s first “drone valley” – cooperating with significant partners in an effort to achieve this objective. In 2018 GZM Metropolis, in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority and Polish Air Navigation Services Agency, launched the Central European Drone Demonstrator (CEDD). This initiative is a response to the growing market for drones and is being run in anticipation of the need for services provided by unmanned aircraft in urban areas (U-Space). Projects being carried out as part CEDD are designed to make a contribution toward the stable development of drone technology – allowing it to become a constant part of the economic and transportation ecosystems. GZM Metropolis is also a member of the EU’s Urban Air Mobility initiative – which is designed to to raise awareness of drone technology and it utilization as a tool that helps develop infrastructure for transporting people and goods.

GZM Metropolis is betting on Electromobility and is gradually electrifying its public transportation.

In the works are i.e. plans to purchase hundreds of e-buses – with part of the funds coming from the  National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiW) and part from a loan. Thanks to the financial aid the cost of an e-bus is comparable to that of a similar model with a diesel engine. The first delivery of these buses will be financed under the Integrated Territorial Investments program. At present the GSM Metropolis fleet includes 130 vehicles which run on alternative fuels. According to a statement at the conclusion of 2018 – the three largest operators in the GSM Metropolis want to add 36 electric buses to their fleet by 2020. The pioneer in terms of purchasing electric buses in the GZM Metropolis was Sosnowiec while, this year, the first electric buses showed up in Katowice. In 2020, the fleet of the operator from Tych will include 23 new buses fueled by Compressed Natural Gas.

GZM Metropolis, in cooperation with ZTM, is participating in Harmony - a project being lead by University College London.

The name “HARMONY” is designed to communicate the project’s main idea – that is – integrating every mode of transportation and available innovative solution in an effort to create an efficient, effective and eco-friendly way of moving around. The basic requirement being that it can easily be applied to large metropolises and urban areas.
