Agnieszka Popiel
Dr. hab., Prof. Agnieszka Popiel from SWPS University is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. In her scientific, clinical, and educational work, she focuses primarily on psychotherapy, whose effectiveness has been researched and implemented according to evidence-based practice principles. As part of the TRAKT programs, she conducted clinical research on trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her studies were the first in Poland to compare the effectiveness of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for PTSD. She then developed an original cognitive therapy protocol and a PTSD prevention program called “Effective Action in Stress,” published jointly with B. Zawadzki and E. Pragłowska in 2019.
She is the author of textbooks on cognitive-behavioral therapy (published in 2008 and 2022) and psychotherapy supervision (published in 2013). Her latest textbook, “Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapy: Theory and Practice,” received the S. Witwicki Award from the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Agnieszka Popiel was the initiator of the founding of the Polish Society for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy in 1998. She is a member of, among others, the Working Group on Humanitarian Crisis and the Accreditation Committee at the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT). Additionally, she serves on the board of the European Association for Clinical Psychology and Psychological Treatment.
At SWPS University, she heads the Center for Clinical Research and Psychotherapy Enhancement and serves as the Director of Scientific and Clinical Affairs at the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Clinic. Together with Dr. Ewa Pragłowska, she also directs postgraduate studies – the School of Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapy. Both were awarded the Grand Prix for their overall work at MedWoman 2023, presented in March 2024 by the Women in Medicine Foundation.
