Prof. Maciej Banach served as Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education from 2010 to 2012.

Subsequently, from 2014 to 2021, he was the Director of the Institute of the Centre of Mother and Child Health in Łódź. Currently, he is the Head of the Department of Preventive Cardiology and Lipidology at the Medical University of Łódź and the Head of the Heart and Vascular Research Center at the University of Zielona Góra.

Additionally, he is a member of the Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences (LCCS) team and an adjunct at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA, which ranks 3rd in the world according to the 2023 Newsweek ranking.

Prof. Banach is the Secretary-General of the European Atherosclerosis Society and the President of the Polish Lipid Association. He also serves as the chair of the Lipid and Blood Pressure Meta-analysis Collaboration Group and the International Lipid Expert Panel. He is the founder and president of the „Innovation for Health” Think-Tank foundation.

Prof. Banach has published over 1500 papers in the field of preventive cardiology and atherosclerosis research, with his works cited over 80,000 times according to Web of Science and over 140,000 times according to Google Scholar, giving him an H-index of 98 and 128 respectively. He is among the top 1% most cited scientists globally according to Clarivate and among the top 5 global experts according to ExpertScape in the field of lipid disorders.

Professor Banach has received numerous awards, including five honorary doctorates awarded by the University of Zagreb (2022), the University of Košice (2020), the University of Bucharest (2019), the Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara (2017), and the Institute of Cardiology in Kiev (2018).

In 2024, he was honored with the Most Influential Person in Medicine Award in Poland on the 100 Pulse of Medicine list and the Healthcare System Visionary title by the Wprost weekly magazine.
