Rear Admiral Professor Tomasz Szubrycht, PhD, DSc
He was born on October 1, 1963.After graduating with first place from the Faculty of Navigation and Ship Armament in 1987, he began service in the Reconnaissance Ship Group of the 3rd Ship Flotilla in Gdynia.
In March 1990, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Ship Commander for Reconnaissance on ORP “Hydrograf”. Meanwhile, in 1993, he was sent to the Naval Amphibious School in San Diego (USA) for specialized studies, graduating with honors a year later. In November 1996, he assumed the position of commander of ORP “Hydrographer.” In 1997, for his performance in reconnaissance activities during the BALTOPS exercise and the training of the crew, the ship under his command received a congratulatory letter from the Commander of the 8th Aircraft Carrier Group Admiral W. W Copelland Jr.
From 1997 to 1998, Cadm. Szubrycht was a postgraduate student at the Naval War College in Newport (USA), from which he graduated with honors. During his studies at the Naval War College, he also completed an optional international relations course organized by lecturers from Harvard University and representatives of the RAND CORPORATION.
In 1999. ORP “Hydrograf”, under his command, was named the Navy’s best ship in the group of special ships. In 2001, he was awarded the “Exemplary Commander” badge. The ship under his command made a significant contribution to the Reconnaissance Ship group being named the best reconnaissance ship in the Polish Armed Forces in 2001 and the Reconnaissance Ship group being awarded the Mark of Honor of the Polish Armed Forces.
In May 2002, while commander of ORP “Hydrograf,” he defended his doctoral dissertation with honors at the Naval Academy’s Department of Navigation and Ship Armament. Already in December of the same year he was transferred to the Naval Academy, to the position of assistant professor. He became involved in research and teaching.
In April 2005, he was appointed Head of the Center for Decision Analysis and Maritime Operations at the Department of Naval Command and Operations (WDiOM). In 2007. The center changed its name to the Center for Analysis and Forecasting of National Maritime Security. All the while, he continued to develop academically, which led him to receive a postdoctoral degree from the National Defense Academy’s Department of National Security in 2009.
From 2010 to 2012, already as Associate Dean for Science, he was responsible for organizing the scientific activities of WDiOM and for initiating and implementing the Department’s cooperation with more than a dozen national and international universities and scientific and research institutions. He is also the creator of the Maritime Security Yearbook. In 2012, he became the Dean of the WDiOM. The faculty headed by Cadm Prof. Tomasz Szubrycht was authorized to confer the postdoctoral degree.
He initiated the establishment of the Military Training of Civilian Students program at WDiOM. Despite his many lines of work, he constantly improved his qualifications and took care of his scientific development. The culmination of this work was the title of Professor, which he received from the President of the Republic of Poland in 2013.
He is a member of the Scientific Committees of several specialized security journals of national and international scope. He is active in social organizations in, among others: Maritime and River League and the Polish Nautological Society.
Since January 23, 2015, Cadm. Prof. Tomasz Szubrycht has been the Rector-Commander of the Naval Academy. In 2016 he was awarded an Honorary Professorship of the Bulgarian Naval Academy, in 2017 he was awarded an Honorary Doctoris Causa of the Romanian Naval Academy, and in 2019 he was awarded an Honorary Doctoris Causa of the Bulgarian Naval Academy. He is the author of more than 200 articles, monographs and original creative works. On Cadet Day, November 29, 2018, he received an admiral’s nomination for the rank of Rear Admiral from the hands of Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Among the orders and decorations that represent the highest recognition of civilian and military merits made in time of peace or war for the glory and development of the Republic of Poland, as well as for service, scientific activities for maritime security and social activities, the Rector-Commander was awarded, among others: “Gold Medal for Meritorious Service to National Defense”, ‘Gold Medal of the Armed Forces in the Service of the Fatherland’, ‘Bronze Cross of Merit’, ‘Silver Medal for Long Service’, Cross of the Sea and River League ‘Pro Mari Nostro’, medal ‘For Meritorious Service to the Polish Navy’, ‘Medal of the Commission of National Education’, ‘Medal for Meritorious Service to the Police’, badge ‘Meritorious Employee of the Sea’, Medal “90 years of Polish Maritime Administration”, “Milito pro Christo” medal of the Field Ordinariate, Haller’s Ring, Gold Medal “For Meritorious Service to the Sea and River League”, Badge of Honor “Meritorious Employee of the Sea”, Badge of Honor of the Navy, Silver Medal for Meritorious Service to the Police, Medal for Meritorious Service to Polish Geopolitics, Badge for Meritorious Service to the SHDK of the Republic of Poland, Badge of Honor of the Polish Red Cross 4th Degree. For cultivating the traditions of the Navy and the memory of the fallen, he was honored by the Director of the Museum of the Polish Army with the “Col. Bronislaw Gembarzewski” medal.
Rector-Commander Rear Admiral Prof. Tomasz Szubrycht is, among others. laureate: Buzdygan 2022 award given by the editors of “Polski Zbrojna” for his effectiveness in implementing the vision of the development of the Naval Academy, the special award of the Minister of Funds and Regional Policy “Orzeł Wprost 2022”, the award of the Polish Geopolitical Society “Distinction for the invaluable synergy of science and practice in the area of cyber security 2024" , the award of the Field Ordinary of the Polish Army “BENEMERENTI” (“Well-deserved”) for “significant contributions to the education of the cadres of the Polish Navy, the formation of a sense of honor and responsibility for the fate of the Fatherland, the multiplication of scientific and technical achievements and for fidelity to the historical heritage. In addition, he is active in the Gdansk Scientific Society, and in 2024 he was admitted to the Gentlemen’s Club and received the title “Gentleman of the Year 2024.”
